Our Story

Authentic Ghanaian Flavour, Made with Love.

From a Love of Cooking to a Life’s Calling

Long before KROGIN had a name, there was a young girl who simply loved to cook.

From the age of nine, Nana Ama Ophelia Mensah found joy in preparing food and, even more so, in seeing the happiness her cooking brought to others. What began as a childhood passion gradually revealed itself to be something much greater: a natural talent, a love for bringing people together through food, and a gift that would shape her life.

As a young woman in the UK, Nana Ama’s talent caught the attention of an acclaimed chef, who recognised her natural flair for cooking and encouraged her to pursue her passion professionally. That encouragement became an important turning point, inspiring her to take her talent seriously and build a career within the culinary and hospitality industry.

She went on to develop her craft through formal education, attending Kilburn Polytechnic in the 1980s, followed by further studies in her later years, gaining a BA in Hospitality & Management, alongside additional culinary training and professional accreditations.

From Passion to Profession

What began in the kitchen soon grew into a career of entrepreneurship.

Our Founder, Nana Ama, went on to establish and operate a number of food businesses, including African Kitchen, as well as a catering company and private catering services. Through each venture, her purpose remained the same: to serve food that was authentic, full of flavour and prepared with genuine care.

But it was her extensive experience within the education sector that would further shape the way she thinks about food.

For almost three decades, Our Founder has been responsible for catering to thousands of students and faculty members within the secondary education sector. Her role extended far beyond simply preparing meals. She oversaw menus, budgets, kitchen teams and the day-to-day running of catering operations — bringing together the creativity of a chef with the discipline and responsibility of a hospitality professional.

“Nutritious food should never mean compromising on taste.”

She became skilled at thoughtfully incorporating fruits, vegetables and other nourishing ingredients into dishes in ways that made them appealing to young palates — sometimes without them even realising just how much goodness had gone into their meal!

For Our Founder, healthy food had to be good food first.

A Taste Rooted in Ghana

At the heart of Our Founder’s cooking is her love for Ghanaian food and the traditional flavours that make it so distinctive.

Her signature is in the way she brings together traditional Ghanaian ingredients with natural herbs and spices to create layers of flavour that feel familiar, yet distinctly her own.

Ingredients such as koobi, momoni, dawadawa, cloves and negro pepper are part of the culinary language she has developed over decades — ingredients that bring depth, character and that unmistakable Ghanaian soul to her dishes.

Her cooking is rooted in tradition, but her experience has taught her that tradition can also evolve.

The Birth of KROGIN

And so, KROGIN was born.

KROGIN brings together the traditional flavours and heritage of Ghanaian cuisine with our Founder’s international culinary experience, creating an authentic melting pot of food, culture and craft.

It is the culmination of a journey that began with a nine-year-old girl who loved to cook, grew through years of education, entrepreneurship and professional experience, and was refined through almost three decades of feeding and caring for thousands of people.

For Our Founder, the time for KROGIN is now.

It is the right time, the right place and the right opportunity to share what she has spent a lifetime learning — and, above all, to answer what she believes is a calling from God to bring her talent to a wider table.

KROGIN is more than food. It is the continuation of a calling.

A lifetime of experience.
A love of Ghanaian flavour.
A passion for bringing people joy through food.

This is our Founder’s story. This is KROGIN.

KROGIN

Real food. Real people. Real passion.

Traditional Ghanaian flavour, home-style cooking and a lifetime of experience — prepared to bring people together.
